Israel... a small country with a large global presence
The Israeli economy today is highly industrialized, diversified and global. Once primarily an agricultural economy, Israel is now widely recognized as one of the world's leading players in telecom, communication, security, and medicine.
Israel imports a range of consumer goods and products. Over the past decade, many European products - from machines to housewares - have been introduced into the Israeli market.
Long considered early adopters, Israel and Israeli importers are always interested in supplying "the latest" products to the Israeli marketplace. The recent strengthening of the euro over the dollar has given local importers the push to search for cheaper products than those found in the Far East.
The country's primary exports consist of diamonds, plastics, high-tech products, biotech and agritech products, software and related applications, and agricultural products.
Historically, Israel has maintained long-standing trade and business connections with the US; however, due to its proximity to Europe and recent free trade agreements with EU countries, the country has developed significant commercial contacts throughout Europe. More recently there has been growth in Israeli exports to Europe.
While there are some cross-cultural differences between the Israeli and European business communities: lack of a common language, differences in the subtleties of mannerisms, and differing expectations, the cultural contrasts are minor and can easily be overcome.
