On September 20th, the Israel Postal Company and Elsag Datamat (a company of Finmeccanica, the
major Italian hi-tech industrial group), signed a 10 Million Euro contract for the supply of sorting equipment
to automate the processing of mail and parcels in the main Israeli cities.
The contract, whose signature was hosted by the Italian Ambassador in Israel, Mr. Luigi Mattiolo, has
been awarded after a long selection process, started in August 2008. The participating companies were
among the most advanced players in the postal automation sector on a global scale.
The contract provides for the deployment of 5 letter and 1 flat sorting systems, equipped with an Hebrew
OCR for the automatic recognition of the mailpiece address, in order to process (on average) more than 2,5
million mail pieces per day.
Since the beginning and untill the contract signature, ElsagDatamat had been assisted by Euroisrael.
This was the first Israeli tender for Finmeccanica.
